Dream Journal
It was a bright and sunny afternoon and I was in the middle of a car race, and I was ahead of everyone by quite a large distance.
Steve, sitting in the passenger seat, pointed toward a warehouse toward my left, but I was too concentrated on driving fast and winning to take my eyes off the road and look to see why he was pointing.
Steve pointed again and, glancing out my left window, I saw a small street market with tents and a lot of people in front of the warehouse. He wanted me to drive through the market, sure it would be a shortcut.
I was skeptical of the shortcut, but gave it a try anyway. I drove through the congested market, and we popped back onto the course just behind the car now in first place. I was upset that the shortcut had cost me ground.
I pushed my car to its limits and won first place by a nose. I drove to my parents’ house and prepared for the crowds to follow and congratulate me on my win. I knew that they would ask how many vacuums I own, so I went to the root cellar to count them.
I pushed Tiger out of the way because he was sleeping in front of the door. I counted two vacuums plus the one out front. I turned off the light and closed the door over Tiger. I pushed him a bit with my foot si that he fit under the door better, and then I went upstairs.
Melissa and one of her friends sat in the living room and asked me a question. I didn’t know how to answer.
I was holding a bunch of small, green garden snakes in my left hand. I took two snakes and put them around someone’s neck like a garland. Wiggling in my hand, a snake bit me and it felt like a pinprick.
I couldn’t let go of them, and they all started biting my hand repeatedly. It hurt, but wasn’t drawing blood. One snake clamped on and wouldn’t let go. With my right hand I grabbed him right behind his jaw joint and he let go, and then twisted his head around and bit the fingers holding onto his jaw.
I walked into the gym locker room after my workout and was shocked that all of the lockers had been torn out. I glanced at the shower and saw that the only stall was empty. I was surprised at how large the locker room was without any of the lockers, but knew they would be replacing the old wooden ones with bright red lockers with attached locks.
I grabbed a towel and headed back to the shower, but when I got back to it there was a man in the shower. He was so tall that I could see his entire head over the shower door. I stopped and stared at him in the shower, wondering if the men’s locker room was completely disabled.
I turned to my right and saw three women in the hot tub. I was on my period and really wanted a shower, but decided the hot tub would be better than waiting for the man to get out of the shower.
I put my towel down and stepped into the hot tub without removing any of my clothes. I worried about my menstrual blood seeping into the hot tub and stopped, standing knee-deep in the hot tub, not knowing what to do.
Themes: Toilet
I was sitting in my doctor’s lab getting blood drawn because I was pregnant. The lab tech pressed a green plastic thing, instead of a rubber band, into the crook of my arm to bring the vein to the surface. She poked me with a large needle and was able to fill it with my blood.
Another nurse who was observing widened her eyes and told me that my blood was very expensive because it had special enzymes in it. They decided to take another vial of blood from my other arm, even after I told them that the vein is difficult to find in my other arm.
She poked around for a bit until she finally found the vein. I wondered how this pregnancy would affect my and Steve’s relationship, whether we would get married or not. I worried about meeting his parents for the first time while I was pregnant. But I was mostly worried about losing the baby like last time.

I was leaving church with Tina, both of us upset that her brother was being a jerk. I had parked diagonally down one street, near the end while she parked elsewhere so we said goodbye and parted ways.
I got into my car and had to back down the long one-way street to leave, and I went faster than I should have. The car at the beginning of the street was parked such that its bumper hung into the street further than everyone else’s. I saw it with enough time to slow down, but I didn’t slow down and I hit the bumper with my own.
I was going to keep driving, but realized that the hit was audible enough that others probably had heard it. I stopped my car, got out, and went over to look at the other car only to find no scratch. A small chunk had come off of my rear bumper, but the rusty car I had hit had no scratch.
Amanda was getting out of her car with her registration, and she told me that the church had a car inspector who would inspect cars for free. He looked over her car and signed the paper before heading back into the church.
I grabbed my registration and saw that my inspection was due that month and should have him look at mine. But I thought about the ding on my bumper and worried that it would lower the value of my car. I drove home and, once there, I decided that I should have the inspector look at it anyway.
Dad wanted to go with me and tried to get into the driver’s seat. I told him firmly that he would not be driving my car and that he had to ride in the passenger’s seat. He still tried to grab the shifter while I was driving, and I yelled at him to stop.
The line of traffic was long and I was going to have to turn left at the intersection, against traffic, to get back to the church. I wondered if I would make it in time.
I turned off all the lights in the office and locked the door because I was leaving for the day. I was walking down the porch steps when B stood up: he had been sitting on the railing behind the door. I stopped when I saw him.
He took two quick steps toward me and then stopped to look down at his nervously wringing hands. He said hi timidly, then turned and accidentally slipped off the edge of the porch into a pile of snow.
There had been bright yellow powder in the pile of snow, and it flew everywhere. He jumped back up onto the porch and, now even more nervous, avoided eye contact and stammered some nonsense while absentmindedly brushing yellow powder off his work clothes.
He managed to ask me if I wanted to go over to Cal’s resort for dinner; that Cal just finished it and it’s beautiful out there. He was very excited about Cal’s resort, and I could hardly believe he is asking me out on a date. I stood before him, silent, while he rambled about missing me and how much he thinks I would like the resort.
His rambling stops and he finally looks up at me. I open my mouth to answer him.

I was standing in my parents’ parking lot with my camera trying to shoot some very pretty pictures in the setting sunlight. But frost kept covering my camera I wasn’t able to brush it off. I sat down and watched the sun set for a bit before I picked up my camera again. Only instead of my camera, I picked up someone else’s small point and shoot.
Steve and my vacation was about to end. We were trying to figure out how to get back to the airport, and I decided we could catch a bus from where we had gotten one before.
We headed toward the ocean and sat with a bunch of other bustling people. We discussed which bus we had taken since there seemed to be a lot of options. We were unsure what time our flight left, which made the bus decision even more difficult.
There was a small channel that brought boats of all shapes and sizes into the area, and we could see a large white cruise ship approaching. The cruise ship was listing far to one side and was more than half under water though it still moved forward. There was a barge in front of the cruise ship carrying all of the cruise ship passengers. The ship wanted to get to port before it went all the way under.
John walked up behind us and convinced us to go for a ride on his boat. We all piled on John’s boat and went out for a short ride. We passed another cruise ship also listing to one side and mostly underwater, and I wondered if there was anyone still aboard.
Steve could see a few people in the ship waving frantically and making prayer motions with their hands. I wondered how much longer they would have breathing air.

I brought Steve to the airport to send him back home.
B and I were at my parents’ house, and we were going to have dinner. I went into the basement and saw Steve’s legs poking out of the covers of the couch’s hide-a-bed. Sure the legs weren’t real and that I was just seeing things, I grabbed his legs and he woke with a start.
I growled at him to get up and get dressed because B was home. He grabbed his pile of clothes and ran into the upstairs bathroom. I walked by the door and saw him putting on his costume overalls from Halloween.
B starts to walk into the kitchen from out on the balcony when I stood in the doorway and blocked him. I said, “You know what I would like? It’s such a beautiful clear night and I can see all of the Homer lights perfectly. I’d like to eat dinner on the grass outside.” He was surprised, but willing to change plans.
I asked B to go downstairs and grab a blanket to sit on while we ate, but he insisted in coming inside first. I worried about him finding Steve, but Steve had slipped out of the bathroom. In the dark, Steve came out of Melissa’s room hunched over and mumbled an excuse before going back into the bathroom.
B looked at me, rolled his eyes, and said that Melissa had some of the weirdest friends.
