It was the beginning of winter and I was holding a baby. B decided that we had to go to my parents’ house on his motorcycle. I argued with him about it because it wasn’t safe for the baby and it was so cold out, but he insisted. I couldn’t convince him to not go.

I climbed on the back of his bike, put the baby under my dark blue sweatshirt, and wrapped my arms around her instead of around B. The wind was very strong and cold, so I periodically put my face inside the collar of my sweatshirt and blew warm air onto the baby’s face. I was afraid she was going to die: neither one of us were properly dressed for the temperature and wind.

We pulled up to my parents’ house and three of my brothers are building the support joists for the new deck. It was really sunny and warm; Rodney, John, and Marty were all sweating with the work.

Marty’s joist contained a lot of rotten wood that wouldn’t lay right. He was getting really frustrated with it. Rodney’s joist was really strong and progressing quite nicely. John had gotten bored with his joist and headed inside.

I went into my parents’ basement and saw B had a pet baby deer. The deer ran up to me like a happy dog. I was afraid that the deer would jump up on me and hurt the baby. I held it away with my arm as best I could while holding the baby with my other arm. I told B that he had to get rid of the deer because it was endangering the baby.

A woman from a deer sanctuary/refuge came to take the deer away. She was very nice and promised the deer would have a good home.
