I was lying in bed shortly after waking talking to B when he walked from the bedroom into the kitchen. I waited for him to return so I could finish what I had been saying, but he stayed in the kitchen. I called to him, and he stepped into the bedroom with a toothbrush in his mouth. I told him that I had been talking to him, but he again walked off while I was talking.

I called to him again, but this time was angry. I got out of bed and stood in the bedroom doorway calling him. I knew he was not listening to me. He came back to the bedroom door and asked, “What?” I angrily slammed the door in his face.

I got ready for work and pulled out my new black bra. I grabbed my old black bra and cut it up, but realized I cut up my white one by mistake.

I drove to work and walked up to the office door, when all of a sudden B stood behind me. I peeked into the office door because all of the lights were on and I could hear music inside but there were no cars in the parking lot. I didn’t see anyone, but knew that someone was in the back.

B asked me what was wrong, and I told him angrily, “Nothing.” He turned to leave, and I told him to wait because there was something wrong. I told him how he had been ignoring me at home that morning even though I had called to him twice, and it had really hurt me.

He held up a recorder and asked me to say my name. I was embarrassed that he wanted to record my voice and refused to talk into the recorder.

He walked back down the driveway and turned left to run down the sidewalk. I was impressed that he had followed me to work on food instead of driving, and worried that he would be late for work.

I went into my office and saw that everything had been rearranged and redecorated. I had a nice solid wood desk with a black leather chair for me and tall red leather chairs for guests in the reception area. In the corner stood a solid wood entertainment center complete with a large television, DVD player, and a stereo system that was playing music.

It was all very plush and expensive looking. I walked through the building and saw that all of the other offices had been similarly redecorated. I loved it.

I was at a huge party with hundreds of people. The police showed up because of the noise and everyone filed out of the building to the front parking lot in order to listen to the police lecture. I stayed inside the building because I needed to change from the skirt I was wearing to some pants.

I picked up a small paintbrush from the hard floor and remove the protective plastic covering from the bristles. I fanned the bristles out, pushed them back on themselves, and jammed the plastic covering over them. I kept pushing until the paintbrush turned itself inside out. I repeated the process two more times so that the brush turned itself right and then inside out again.

My jeans laid on the floor; I grabbed them and saw they were inside out. I was running out of time; the police were going to wonder any moment why I stayed inside while everyone else followed them outside.

After much trouble with my jeans, I successfully pulled them on as everyone from the party filed back inside. No one was in trouble with the police, but no one felt like partying anymore. I wanted to know what the police said, but no one wanted to talk about it.

I was painting the garage a dark grey with a large spray gun. I didn’t want to paint the floor, but it was impossible to paint the bottom of the walls with the spray gun and not get any on the floor. There ended up being a foot of dark grey paint feathered around the perimeter of the garage floor.

I walked down First Avenue downtown and saw a large crowd gathered at a large, bright orange building. The large building was the new hotel in town, and the hotel was holding a grand opening celebration.

I made my way to the front of the crowd and through the front door. The interior was burnt orange in a bad retro sort of way. The woman behind the front desk had a small beehive; she was reading the newspaper and smoking a cigarette. The elevators did not work.

I drove into my parking spot and noticed that my bicycle had been moved and the motorcycle cover was missing. Inside, my apartment looked like my parents’ basement. My mother was in the kitchen doing dishes and Melissa sat at the dining room table. I asked my mom if she had moved my bike, but she was too busy singing and dancing to the radio to answer.

Mike Beach was in the bathroom staring at his reflection in the mirror. I noticed the bath mat was different and there was a strange towel hanging behind the door. I asked Mike how he was this morning; he looked very nervous. I could tell he was stalling because he didn’t want to leave the bathroom.

It was 7:20 am and I had to get moving before I was late for school. Mom poked her head into the bathroom and I knew I had to introduce her and Mike, but I could not remember his name. At the last minute it popped into my head and introductions were made.

Mike, apparently feeling more relaxed, went into the dining room and introduced himself to Melissa. Mom playfully pushed me and I fell back into the tub, which was filled with warm water. I was wearing shorts and a tank top and knew I would dry in no time. I would not be late for school.

I was sleeping in a bit in the morning, and B leaned over the bed to kiss me goodbye. I saw that he wasn’t wearing his uniform, and I told him that he was going to get in trouble. Even though it was his last day at work, he still needed to wear his uniform. He grinned, knowing full well that his boss couldn’t do anything about it.

After he left, I got out of bed and went into the living room. Melissa was sprawled on top of our air mattress in the middle of the floor watching television. She looked up at me when I grabbed Lacey’s leash to take her outside.

I opened the apartment door and there stood two tall teenage boys about to knock on my door. Lacey barked at them a few times and I apologized for her, but they hardly noticed. I asked if I could help them, and they said they had something to show me in the parking lot.

As we walked outside, the taller boy told me he was backing up and got a little too close to my car, and he was really sorry. I knew there was a ding, and was prepared for something really bad.

We got to the car and I looked at the front hood and couldn’t see a scratch. He pointed me to the driver’s side door, and I saw that it was so badly bent the door would not latch.

There was a lot of traffic on our little street that morning, and I looked up to see a black truck illegally pass a little white truck, then slow down in front of the white truck. The white truck got squished between the black truck and another vehicle, and then careened out of control onto our lawn to my left.

The lady in the little white truck looked determined to get where she was going, and turned on her emergency lights: she was an ambulance. She sat near the intersection waiting for people to stop so she could go (though I wasn’t sure if she was headed to the scene of an accident, or if she wanted to catch the black truck).

She stepped out of her little truck as a large red fire engine barreled down the cross street towards the intersection. She waved her arms frantically trying to get the driver to alter the fire truck’s course. The truck swerved to the left and plowed right through my neighbor’s apartment.

I panicked. Then I remembered that my neighbor had a two-bedroom apartment, and while the fire truck smashed through one of the bedrooms, maybe she or her little boy was still safe. I knew that I would go in to get whoever was still in the safe bedroom.

My eyes left the huge hole the fire truck left in the apartment building and swung over to my apartment window. I screamed Melissa’s name.
